This is a portrait of the actor, Harry "Dobe" Carey, Jr., who appeared in many John Ford westerns of the 40's, 50's and 60's. The original work hangs in the Carey home in Durango, Colorado. Dobe Carey still appears in movies in the "old cowboy" or "pa" role - e.g., "The Shadow Riders" with Tom Selleck and Sam Elliot. This work is an example of Duffey's "biographical portrait" - most of the John Ford westerns were shot in Monument Valley, Utah, which serves as the background for this work. Carey was a cavalry soldier in the movie "Rio Grande" and in the portrait he is dressed in costume. In the bottom left of the portrait, a vignette of Carey and actor/friend Ben Johnson doing their own "roman riding" (one foot each on two separate horses) is painted. Carey was especially proud that this "stunt" was performed by him during the movie.
